Mathematics



Mathematics Club:. The Mathematics Club is open to all students interested in mathematics. Activities might include programs of special interest, speakers, and field trips.

Kappa Mu Epsilon: This is an academic honor society for students meeting the necessary academic requirements.

Departmental Awards:. Each spring, awards are presented to outstanding students at the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior levels. An outstanding junior is awarded the Jenie Tate and the Clyde A. and Mary Long Scholarship to be used during the student’s senior year.

William Lowell Putnam Competition: A national competition held for students who are recommended by the mathematics faculty. This is held annually the first Saturday of December.

Departmental Honors: Students may pursue departmental honors in mathematics. The Honors Program in Mathematics provides students who show exceptional promise and potential in mathematics the opportunity to: enrich their study of mathematics by exploring topics not normally covered in the standard curriculum; engage in their own research; participate in professional activities.

Admission Criteria:


1. Satisfactory completion of at least 60 semester hours of college work and an overall GPA of at least 3.25.

2. A GPA of at least 3.25 for all course work completed in mathematics.

3. Completion of Mathematics 2315, 2421, 2322, and 3302.

4. Completion of the departmental application form for admission into the Mathematics Honors Program.

5. Completion of a successful interview with the faculty of the Mathematics Department.

Students must meet the requirements for Department Honors listed in the Honors Program section of the catalogue and the Departmental Honors Requirements before they can graduate with a B.A. or B.S. with honors in Mathematics.

Departmental Honors Requirements:

1. Completion of seven hours of honors credit.

2. Completion of three to six hours of Honors Tutorial (Mathematics 4X96*). These hours may be taken in conjunction with current advanced courses or by independent study. AIS courses carrying Mathematics credit may be used to fulfill this requirement.

3. Successful completion of a Senior Thesis or Project (Mathematics 4X97*) (1-3 hours)

4. Overall GPA of 3.25 in all course work as well as in mathematics course work.
