Connected and Disconnected Thoughts
Abstract: Lattice field theory is an ambitious technology-driven attempt to solve difficult field theories numerically using an artificial space-time "lattice". This talk will be an introduction to some of the ideas and techniques of lattice field theory from the point of view of an active practitioner. In the first part of the talk I will concentrate on how Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of quark interactions, is formulated and solved on a lattice. In the second half I will emphasize the current topic I am working on, the computer evaluation of so-called "disconnected diagrams" using novel numerical techniques within the lattice formalism.
