National Undergraduate Research Observatory Consortium

McMurry University has been invited to join the National Undergraduate Research Observatory Consortium. This consortium is a group of 14 primarily undergraduate colleges and universities which shares observing time on a research-grade telescope at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. It is the purpose of this consortium to provide hands-on training and research experiences for undergraduate students and to encourage more undergraduate students to choose scientific careers.

The consortium shares 60% of the available observing time on a 31 -inch optical telescope at Lowell Observatory (a primary astronomical research facility). Member institutions are guaranteed observing time on the telescope (typically 5 or 6 night observing runs, once or twice a year). The observatory comes complete with research-grade instrumentation, computer facilities, and professional support staff.

McMurry, along with many other educational institutions, is in the process of incorporating a greater amount of research into its curriculum. With membership in NURO, McMurry gains a ready-made research facility. Furthermore, from the point of view of doing astronomical research, having a dedicated, garanteed-time observatory in a prime location is quite an advantage. With membership in NURO, McMurry students (under the direction of Dr. Wayne Keith) will be involved in actual research projects, helping them immensely in their preparation for graduate study or technical employment after graduation.
