Ray Farrell
Men's
Basketball Coach
The University of Texas at Dallas is entering its inaugural season of basketball competition as a member of the NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference. Ray Farrell, the first basketball coach in the history of UTD, was hired on April 6, 1998 and immediately began assembling a team for competition in the 1998-1999 season. Coach Farrell hit the recruiting trails on day one, and within two months, Coach Farrell recruited 12 players from the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex and Houston, Texas. This was the beginning of the University of Texas at Dallas Basketball Program.
Coach Farrell is extremely excited about the first recruiting class in the history of UTD, because it has a mixture of transfers with experience and freshman with great promise. This years recruiting class includes Chad Bagnell and Ray Lee from Eastfield College, Greg Foster from Oral Roberts University, Bryon Harrison from Richland College, Brent Harrole from Millsaps College, Matt Brunson from Regis University, and two promising freshman from Houston, Jeremy Prasatik (HYCA) and William Hagans (St Pius X). Although the UTD squad does not have a lot of height, each of the players is versatile and can play a variety of positions. This means the Comets will look to play a tenacious full court man defense that will generate transition offense. The Comets are looking forward to the 1998-1999 season, and they promise to make it exciting for all of the UTD students, faculty, and fans. (top of page)

Rachelle Leonard
Women's
Basketball Coach
Rachelle Leonard will enter her first year as Head Women's Basketball Coach at The University of Texas at Dallas. Leonard, 27,will lead the first ever women's team, representing UTD in the American Southwest Conference as well as the NCAA Division III.
Leonard was the head coach at the University of Dallas for the past two seasons. Beforethat she held assistant coaching positions in basketball and softball at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and at Nicholls State University, a Division I school in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
Leonard, played the first two years of her collegiate career at Coastal Carolina University, a Division I school in Conway, South Carolina, before transferring to Division II Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina. She finished her Bachelor's of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1996.
Rachelle grew up in Springfield, Ohio, located about twenty minutes from Columbus, Ohio. Her father and mother, Richard and Sondra Leonard still reside in Springfield. She also has a younger sister Rebecca, 16, who is a junior at Springfield North High School and plays varsity basketball for the Lady Panthers.
This year The University of Texas at Dallas Womens Basketball Team will be faced with a daunting task; to build a respectable program. The Lady Comets will be starting from scratch, representing a university which had never sponsored mens or womens basketball teams. On November 20th both the mens and womens basketball team will make history by competing in the Howard Payne Classic. It will be in this tournament that both teams will take the court in their first ever NCAA collegiate contest.
First year coach Rachelle Leonard is optimistic about the upcoming 1998-1999 season. After six months of recruiting, Leonard feels she has a young but solid team. "This year success will depend on the maturity of our freshman," Leonard states. Some of our freshman will be playing major roles on this basketball team, we hope that we can make it a positive experience for them. Leonard is very familiar with the American Southwest Conference coaching at the University of Dallas the past two years. "Our conference is very competitive and with more additions it is only getting tougher. We hope to be in the middle of the pack this year and build from there."
UTDs roster will consist of seven freshman, three sophomores, four juniors, and one senior. Melissa Moses will be expected to lead the team at the point guard position. Stacie Sullivan, Jaime Eggspuehler, and Kerrie McLemore will see time at the shooting guard position. At the small forward position Mindy Mott, Tonya Walker, Bianca Yturralde, and Emily Weaks will help out. The forward position will consist of Shelley Dunn, Lisa Fowler, Kim Rose, and Tiffany Weaks. Becky Fulin and Stephanie Plemons will be expected to provide a threat in the low post.
This years team has nothing to lose according to Coach Leonard. "No one expects for us to do well because we are just starting out. The commitment that I have seen from these young ladies gives me hope. These players are excited about being the first team ever at the University of Texas at Dallas, instead of looking at the negatives they look at the positives." Only time can tell what the outcome of the 1998-1999 season will hold for the Lady Comets. (top of page)
