Mississippi College earns 2nd straight men and women's titles
McMurry's David Chandler, Mississippi's Sheila Hynum place 1st

RICHARDSON, Texas -- The Mississippi College men and women's cross country teams successfully defended their 1997 ASC Cross Country Championships with a repeat performance this past weekend on their home Choctaw Trails course in Clinton, Miss. The Choctaws have won the ASC Cross Country Championship in both years they have competed in the conference.

The men's overall champion was McMurry's David Chandler. The junior runner ran his fastest time of the season over the 8K course, finishing in 27:17.70. Teammate Josh Hufstedler placed third overall with a time of 27:27.81. Chandler and Hufstedler helped the Indians to a second-place team finish with 44 points. Mississippi College placed all five of its runners in the top 10. Trent Barger, who holds the fastest time in the Conference this season at 26:06, finished first for the Choctaws and second overall with a time of 27:27.45. Joining Barger in the top 10 finishers were Todd Plunkett (28:06.19), Cliff Roy (28:10.04), Seth Jones (28:11.09) and Jono Sellers (28:27.43).

Rounding out the men's competition were the University of Dallas (83 points) and the University of the Ozarks (102 points.)

The women's championship was fiercely contested as Mississippi College nudged out McMurry by one point for the team championship. The Choctaws, by placing all five runners in the top 10, earned the ASC Championship by one point with 33 total points. McMurry finished with 34. Pacing Mississippi College was freshman Sheila Hynum who covered the 5K course in 19:40.33. Teammate Julie Schmidt placed third overall with a time of 20:50.25. Joining them were Anna White (21:57.86), Rocsana del Castillo (22:51.55) and Melissa Courtney (22:56.64).

Talitha Belcher, who placed 4th overall with a time of 21:54.11, paced McMurry. Jessica Thompson (23:13.53) and Gina Vandiver (23:23.43) were the Indians other top-10 finishers. Rounding out the women's championship were LeTourneau (65 points) and University of the Ozarks (103 points). (top of page)

Choctaws' Engle named Coach of the Year

Mississippi College men and women's cross country coach Chuck Engle was named ASC Coach of the Year after leading both teams to repeat team titles at Saturday's ASC Cross Country Championship held in Clinton, Miss., at Mississippi College.
