Paul Burns
Women's
Soccer Coach
Paul Burns
joined the Austin College staff in August 1995 to serve the
womens soccer program first head coach when it was elevated
to varsity status in the Fall of 1996 and to act as the
Colleges Director of Intramural and Recreational Sports.
Burns has made a positive impact on the young program, as the Austin College womens soccer program has posted a respectable 19-17-2 overall record in its first two seasons. In fact, last season Austin College earned its first ever regional top-ten ranking.
A native of England, Paul received his bachelors degree in sports science at the University of Staffordshire and completed his teaching certification at DeMontfort University (England).
In 1995, Burns received a masters degree in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia with an emphasis in sports psychology and exercise science. While at the University of Missouri, he was head coach for the Tigers mens soccer club, and also served as head soccer coach at Columbias Stephens College.
An accomplished soccer player, Burns was a member of the Staffordshire University team and was a member of a Staffordshire squad that reached the United Kingdom National Finals. (top of page)
The 1998 campaign will be the third season of varsity womens soccer at Austin College. Head coach Paul Burns team is coming off a successful 1997 season in which the team posted the most wins in history (11); AC went 11-7-1 overall and 5-2-1 in American Southwest Conference play.
According to head coach Burns, this years Austin College womens soccer team will be looking to build and improve on the past seasons performances. A talented group of 16 returning players and an outstanding group of nine freshmen will make up the 1998 team.
Leading the group of returning players will the 1997 American Southwest Conference Womens Soccer Player of the Year, junior forward Amy Scull. Scull, a native of Seguin, Texas, led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 14 assists last year. A scoring machine during the 97 season, she had five games last season in which she scored three or more goals. A star on the field and in the classroom, Amy was also a 1997 GTE District VI Academic All-American last year.
Junior Amy Hatcher, a First Team All-Conference selection in 1997, returns to help direct the AC midfield. An offensive threat from the midfield, Hatcher scored nine goals and had seven assists last year. Junior goalkeeper Jennifer Witt, a two-time Player of the Week selection plus and Honorable Mention All-Conference pick, is back to anchor the Austin College defense. The teams second leading goal scorer with 12 in 97, sophomore forward Amy Lockhart return to add firepower to the Kangaroos offense.
Two talented sophomore defenders, First Team All-Conference selection, Laura McDonald and Honorable All-Conference choice, Sharon Larson will help solidify this years defense. Both McDonald and Larson can also score from the back, as they each scored at least one goal last season.
Austin College will open its 1998 season with a home match versus Texas A&M-Commerce on September 1. The team will open American Southwest Conference play on Saturday, September 5 against LeTourneau University. The early season schedule should be a favorable one for the Kangaroos, as they play seven of their first eight matches at home; while the seasons home stretch will be a tough one for the AC womens soccer team, as they close the regular season with five of six matches on the road.
