Jose Alonzo
Men's Soccer
Coach
Jose Alonzo enters his fifth season as the Tigers' chief
after a 14-5 showing in 1997 and winning back-to-back Heart of
Texas Conference North Zone championships in 1996 and 1997. In
1995, the Tigers' inaugural season, they were Big State Champions
and Alonzo was named BSC Coach of the Year. In their two years in
the HOT conference champions, Incarnate Word, whom they took to
overtime in the 1997 championship game. Also in 1997, they
defeated such teams as Midwestern State University, St. Edwards
University and Texas Christian University.
Alonzo expects the 1998 edition of ETBU soccer to be very strong as they enter the American Southwest Conference and will face many new opponents as well as some old rivals. Their goal will be to make it o the playoffs, as they have every year of their short, but very successful, existence.
Since beginning full season play in 1995, Alonzo has compiled a phenomenal 49-13 record at the helm. Originally from Honduras, Alonzo received a BBA in Marketing and a BS and MS in Agriculture from Stephen F. Austin State University. He added a teacher certification in Spanish and ESL from the University of Texas at Tyler in 1991. Alonzo is currently doing post-graduate work at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
While attending SFA, Alonzo played club soccer while coaching the women's team for a short time. He was the assistant soccer coach at Marshall High School for three years. He also was a member of the Honduran National Basketball Team, and cites one of his most memorable experiences as an athlete was playing against the Harlem Globetrotters and meeting legendary center Bill Russell. Besides coaching soccer, Alonzo also teaches Spanish at ETBU.
Alonzo is married to Tami and has three children, Micah (6), Anna (4) and Gabriel (1). (top of page)
Returning 15 players from last season's very talented 14-5 squad, coach Jose Alonzo feels 1998 will be another strong season for the East Texas Baptist University Tigers. The Tigers will be facing many new opponents in their new conference, but are confident that they will rise successfully to the challenge as they have always done in the past.
The Tigers should be in contention for the playoffs with an experienced team consisting for five seniors, eight juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen.
Bryce Morros, a two-time All-American who led the nation in scoring in 1995, will be entering his senior year with high expectations. He has the ability to play both as a forward and a sweeper and should see action in both positions. Also returning are several key players - Jonathan Cardensas, Justin Cooley, Matt Laster at forward; Buddy Ogletree, Pedro Millan, Antonio Encarnacion and Stuart Morrow in the midfield; and Donny Seals, Erasmo Vences, Cody Carter, John Griffin and Philip Talley on defense. Goalkeepers Clint Carter and Tommy Tynes plus five promising newcomers in Jeremy Lawrence, Shawn Massad, Michael Shewmaker, Matt Kulwicki and transfer Kenneth Morris will give the 1998 Tigers a lot of depth and added strength.
Besides playing ASC teams, ETBU will also be facing perennial powerhouses Belhaven College and the University of Mobile as well as NCCAA opponents Bartlesville Wesleyan and York College as they seek to make the NCCAA national tournament. (top of page)
