Merle Ziegler
Men's Soccer Coach
Merle Ziegler begins his fourth
season as head coach of the men's soccer team at Mississippi
College. The Choctaws competed successfully in the Southeastern
Collegiate Soccer League, completing the final season in the SCSL
with a 4-0-4 record under Ziegler's guidance.
Ziegler lead the Choctaws to an overall record of 6-5-1 and a conference record of 5-2-1 in their first year as a varsity sport and as part of the American Southwest Conference. Ziegler has coached Division I youth soccer teams in Virginia and Mississippi. He also coaches Brilla, an evangelistic soccer team which has toured Costa Rica, Antigua, and Venezuela. Ziegler has played soccer in Mexico, Costa Rica, Antigua, and Bolivia.
He is also a member of the Cedarville College Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1974 varsity soccer team which placed fifth in the NAIA national tournament. (top of page)
Coach Merle Ziegler and his Mississippi College soccer team have an optimistic outlook for the 1998 season. The Choctaws had an impressive showing in their 1997 American Southwest Conference debut and their first year of varsity soccer under NCAA rules.
The Choctaws finished last season 6-5-1 and 5-2-1 in the ASC (3rd place finish) under Ziegler and hopes to continue to build upon their winning tradition. Returning for the Choctaws will be seniors David Gibbs, Sam Kelly and Barry Lagg. Kelly and Lagg will provide stability and experience on defense. They have been an integral part of the Choctaws' defense since their freshman year.
They were both named to the ASC All-Conference Honorable Mention team. Gibbs' versatility as a player will be used in the midfield positions and defensively. He can make outstanding contributions at many different positions. He was named to the ASC All-Conference team. Along with the seniors, junior Scott Taylor, Daron Clark, and Wade Sumrall will be counted on to provide valuable minutes for the Choctaws. Sumrall is returning from ACL surgery but has fully recovered. His ball control and stamina will be utilized in the midfield and in the offensive end of the field. Sumrall was Player of the Week last season. Clark will be the key to providing the team with offense and midfield play making.
Having a solid nucleus of returning players mixed with first year players Colin Smith, a transfer from Louisiana State University; Andrew Veteto, a transfer player from the University of Memphis; Joshua Grissom, from Brookhaven High; and Byron Knight from Murrah High. Ziegler feels he has the right mixture of talent to compete for the American Southwest Conference Championship. (top of page)
