Merle Ziegler
Men's Soccer Coach

Merle Ziegler begins his fourth season as head coach of the men's soccer team at Mississippi College. The Choctaws competed successfully in the Southeastern Collegiate Soccer League, completing the final season in the SCSL with a 4-0-4 record under Ziegler's guidance.

Ziegler lead the Choctaws to an overall record of 6-5-1 and a conference record of 5-2-1 in their first year as a varsity sport and as part of the American Southwest Conference. Ziegler has coached Division I youth soccer teams in Virginia and Mississippi. He also coaches Brilla, an evangelistic soccer team which has toured Costa Rica, Antigua, and Venezuela. Ziegler has played soccer in Mexico, Costa Rica, Antigua, and Bolivia.

He is also a member of the Cedarville College Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1974 varsity soccer team which placed fifth in the NAIA national tournament. (top of page)

Season Outlook

Coach Merle Ziegler and his Mississippi College soccer team have an optimistic outlook for the 1998 season. The Choctaws had an impressive showing in their 1997 American Southwest Conference debut and their first year of varsity soccer under NCAA rules.

The Choctaws finished last season 6-5-1 and 5-2-1 in the ASC (3rd place finish) under Ziegler and hopes to continue to build upon their winning tradition. Returning for the Choctaws will be seniors David Gibbs, Sam Kelly and Barry Lagg. Kelly and Lagg will provide stability and experience on defense. They have been an integral part of the Choctaws' defense since their freshman year.

They were both named to the ASC All-Conference Honorable Mention team. Gibbs' versatility as a player will be used in the midfield positions and defensively. He can make outstanding contributions at many different positions. He was named to the ASC All-Conference team. Along with the seniors, junior Scott Taylor, Daron Clark, and Wade Sumrall will be counted on to provide valuable minutes for the Choctaws. Sumrall is returning from ACL surgery but has fully recovered. His ball control and stamina will be utilized in the midfield and in the offensive end of the field. Sumrall was Player of the Week last season. Clark will be the key to providing the team with offense and midfield play making.

Having a solid nucleus of returning players mixed with first year players Colin Smith, a transfer from Louisiana State University; Andrew Veteto, a transfer player from the University of Memphis; Joshua Grissom, from Brookhaven High; and Byron Knight from Murrah High. Ziegler feels he has the right mixture of talent to compete for the American Southwest Conference Championship. (top of page)

Darryl Longabaugh
Women's Soccer Coach

Darryl Longabaugh begins his second season as head coach of the Mississippi College Lady Choctaw soccer team. Longabaugh led the Lady Choctaws to a 5-6 overall record and a 4-4 conference record (placing third in the conference) during their first season of existence.

During his first year, Longabaugh had one player make the American Southwest All-Conference team, three received the American Southwest All-Conference Honorable Mention, two made Academic All-Conference, and a player selected as Freshman Conference Player of the Year.

Before being named head coach, Longabaugh served the college as the assistant men=s soccer coach for four seasons. He spent two under Jay Albritton and two under Merle Ziegler. As assistant coach, Longabaugh was a part of the men=s team that played third in the Southeastern Conference tournament and made the final four tournament in the Southeastern Conference. His primary duties as assistant coach was those of recruiting, training the goalkeepers, and on the field coaching.

While Longabaugh serves as head coach of the Lady Choctaw=s soccer team, he is also a full time history teacher and head soccer coach at Copiah Academy. Season Outlook

In its first season of existence, the Mississippi College Lady Choctaw soccer team turned many heads with their performance. Finishing with a 5-6 record (3rd in the conference), the Lady Choctaws return nine starters and nine letter winners, including the ASC Freshman Player of the Year in Courtney Shires. Head coach Darryl Longabaugh has a lot to look forward too.

Shires' defensive skills will be needed to make a solid run for the conference championship. Along with Shires, Chiali Lee, a midfielder will give the Lady Choctaws that extra offensive punch. Lee led the team in goals with five last season. Tiffany Muchco will return as a starter from last season, she scored four goals and had five assists.

Newcomers Amanda Kingston, a forward from Bay High School will get a lot of playing time. Kingston scored 18 goals and had 10 assists for Bay High. April Moss will provide depth at the midfield position. Moss started for Pillow Academy. Another key newcomer is Kyt Keen, a stopper from Warren Central High. Keen is expected to play a lot of minutes this season for Longabaugh.

This will be the second season for the Lady Choctaws' soccer program and the excitement is in the air. (top of page)
