Scott Placek
Men's Soccer Coach
Scott Placek enters his third season as the Men's Soccer Coach for the U of O Eagles. Placek cames to the University of the Ozarks in 1996, as coach of both the men's and women's teams, with the charge of starting the new varsity soccer program. With the promotion of Aaron Metzger to head Women's Coach, Placek will focus on the men's team in 1998.
Coach Placek holds a USSF national license and has completed the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma course. He is currently the head coach for the Arkansas State Soccer Association's 1982 Boys ODP team and a member of the ASSA coaching education staff, teaching coaching education courses across the state of Arkansas. Prior to coming to the University, Coach Placek was the Director of Coaching for the River City Rangers soccer club in Austin, Texas and served as a state staff coach for the South Texas Olympic Development Program.
In keeping with the University's belief in the complementary mix of academics and athletics, Coach Placek also teaches in the Division of Business, Government, and Communications. He holds a J.D. (with honors) from the University of Texas School of Law and a B.S. (with honors) from Auburn University. (top of page)
After a 1997 campaign that saw the Eagles start nine freshmen throughout the season, a more experienced Ozarks squad is ready for the 1998 schedule. Youth, however, is still the buzzword for the 1998 Eagles. Although they return eight starters from the 1997 team, the Ozarks roster has no juniors or seniors. The sixteen returning lettermen are led by the Eagle's three All-Conference performers. 1997 ASC Freshman of the Year Matt Dresher returns as the Eagle's goalkeeper, looking to improve on his 1.72 GAA in 1997. On the field, team captain and ASC All-Conference defender Jeff Jackson is joined by ASC All-Conference midfielder Chris Burns. Jackson led the 97 Eagles in scoring while Burns was the assist leader.
Six freshmen are expected to make significant contributions to the 1998 Eagles squad. Tommy Botello (MF, Corsicana, TX) and Nick Pafford (MF, N. Richland Hills, TX), both former members of the NTSSA ODP State team, should assume important roles in the Ozarks midfield. Marcos Gonzalez (F, Georgretown, TX), a UIL first team all-state selection, will battle for a starting role in the Eagles attack. In the defense, Tim Sovereign (D, Bedford, TX), Daniel Sigala (D, Borger, TX) and Aaron Coats (D, Boise, ID) will help replace the loss of three starting defenders from the 1997 Ozarks squad.
Ozarks coach Scott Placek looks for the Eagles to improve on 1997's 5-13-1 record. "With eight returning starters, we should be a much moreexperienced team. However, 1998 poses a much tougher schedule for us and we will be a team with no upperclassmen." Still, the experience of the returning players and the quality of the freshman class should lead to an improved 1998 season. "We have a four year time frame for building this program around the 1997 freshman class," Placek said. "We have to progress each year, but we are not going to take shortcuts to get there. The most important thing for 1998 is to build steadily on the foundation we laid in 1997." (top of page)

Aaron Metzger
Women's Soccer Coach
Aaron Metzger will head the Women's Soccer program this year after being the assistant for both the women's and men's teams last year. Metzger is a product of Dallas youth soccer where he attended and played for the 1986 state high school champions, Duncanville High School. Metzger then played a year at DeAnza College in California before moving on and playing professionally in the California Penninsula League. Metzger finished his playing career in the USISL where he was an all-star defender.
Before coming to U of O, while attending Southwest Texas State University, Metzger led their women's team to two consecutive appearances at the National Collegiate Club Soccer Associations National Championship Tournament in Phoenix Arizona. (top of page)
This season the Lady Eagles are looking to continue the improvement the program has shown over the past two years. With a number of returning players the Lady Eagles will be relying on experience and a well seasoned defense.Sarah Clary and Crista Miser will captain the team from the midfield providing experienced leadership for the seven incoming freshmen. Forward Lisa Ghio will anchor the defense, and leading goal scorer from a year ago, Saima Chauhan, will hope for another great offensive year. (top of page)
