Men's Soccer
Hardin-Simmons captures men's soccer championship
RICHARDSON, Texas -- Brian Nelson scored four goals Saturday as the Hardin-Simmons University men's soccer team defeated LeTourneau University 5-1 in the championship game of the 1998 ASC Men's Soccer Tournament. The victory earns the Cowboys their first men's soccer championship. Austin College has one the previous two.
Hardin-Simmons advanced to Saturday's final with a 3-1 victory of the University of Texas at Dallas, the No. 2 East Team, in the semifinals. LeTourneau defeated Mississippi College 4-2 in the other semifinal. Mississippi College was added as the fourth team to the tournament after Schreiner College elected to forgo the ASC Tournament to compete in the NAIA playoffs. Mississippi College had the fourth-best record overall.
The East Division winner will host the 1999 Men's Soccer Tournament. Being added to the Conference for next season will be Concordia University at Austin (West Division). This will give the ASC six teams in the East Division and five teams in the West Division for the 1999 soccer season.

Hardin-Simmons captures 3rd-straight crown
RICHARDSON, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons University women's soccer team captured its third-straight ASC Women's Soccer Championship this past weekend with a 2-0 defeat of Austin College in Saturday's final match of the 1998 ASC Women's Soccer Tournament held in Sherman, Texas.
The Cowgirls won the West Division with a perfect 11-0-0 record and did not give up a goal to an ASC opponent all season. Overall, Hardin-Simmons finished with a 16-5-1 record and will wait to see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs which begin November 4. The Cowgirls advanced to Saturday's championship match with a 3-0 victory of the University of Texas at Dallas. The Comets qualified for the tournament by finishing 2nd in the East Division with an 8-10-2, 5-3-0 in the ASC record. It was UT-Dallas' first year of competition in the newly realigned American Southwest Conference.
Austin College captured the East Division crown with a 5-1 win over UT-Dallas last Tuesday and won the right to host the 1998 tournament. The Kangaroos finished the season with an 11-7-1, 5-2-1 in the ASC record and are hopeful of receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA post-season. Austin College defeated the University of Dallas 5-0 in the semifinals to advance. University of Dallas finished 2nd in the West with a 12-6-1, 7-3-1 in the ASC record.
