ASC Men's Soccer pre-season polls announced
East Texas Baptist, LeTourneau picked to head East Division

RICHARDSON, Texas – LeTourneau University and East Texas Baptist University, in its first year of eligibility for the ASC Men’s Soccer Championship, are the pre-season favorites to win the East Division according to a vote taken by men’s soccer coaches.

The Yellow Jackets won the East Division in its first year of conference membership with a 14-5-1 overall, 7-1-0 ASC record and advanced to the Conference Tournament Championship game before falling to Hardin-Simmons 5-1. East Texas Baptist had an impressive 18-0-2 record last season but was ineligible for the Conference Championship as it continued to phase out its athletic scholarships.

Austin College is picked third and should improve upon its 4-14-1 season of a year ago. University of the Ozarks and Mississippi College round out the East Division Poll.

LeTourneau’s Dusty Beets is picked as the Pre-Season Offensive Player of the Year, and teammate Brad Swenson has been selected Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year. Beets lead the conference in shots (102), points (55) and goals (25) last season.

Hardin-Simmons picked to repeat in West Division

RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons University won the West Division crown then defeated LeTourneau 5-1 in the championship game of the ASC Post-Season Tournament to capture it’s first men’s soccer championship. According to a vote taken by men’s soccer coaches, the Cowboys are picked to repeat as West Division Champions.

Hardin-Simmons had a 14-5-3 overall, 8-2-1 ASC record last season and received three of four first-place votes to hed the poll with 22 points. University of Texas at Dallas, who realigns into the West Division this season is coming off a 11-6-1, 6-2-0 ASC year which say the Comets advance to the conference tournament in its first year of membership. UT-Dallas is picked second in the poll with 21 points. Schreiner College is picked third with 15 points and rounding out the poll is newcomer Concordia University at Austin and University of Dallas with 10 points, followed by University of Mary Hardin-Baylor with six points.

UT-Dallas’ Chad Lehman is picked as the Pre-Season Offensive Player of the Year, and Hardin-Simmons’ Trevor Harrison has been selected Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year. Lehman ranked 5th in points with 33 and 5th in goals with 13 for the Comets.

ASC Women's Soccer pre-season polls announced
Austin College picked to win East Division Championship

RICHARDSON, Texas – Nothing has changed from a year ago as Austin College is once again picked to win the American Southwest Conference Women’s Soccer East Division according to vote taken by women soccer coaches.

The Kangaroos, who won the East Division title with a 5-2-1 ASC record, 11-7-1 overall, and received three of four first-place votes to edge out Mississippi College. The Choctaws have been an improving program since joining the conference in 1997. Mississippi College had a record of 6-6-4 overall, 4-2-2 in the conference. University of the Ozarks was a unanimous pick to finish third, and rounding out the poll is LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist with six points each. East Texas Baptist will field a varsity team for the first time in 1999.

Austin College midfielder Amy Scull is picked as the Pre-Season Offensive Player of the Year, and Mississippi College goalkeeper Jane Halbert-Jones is the Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year. Scull finished 2nd in points last season with 46 and Halbert-Jones was 3rd in Goals Against Average with a 0.82 average.

Hardin-Simmons picked to win West Division

RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ women’s soccer program has been the measuring stick in the American Southwest Conference the past three seasons. The Cowgirls are picked to win the West Division in 1999 and will look for their fourth-straight conference championship.

Joining Hardin-Simmons in the West Division this season will be the University of Texas at Dallas and Concordia University at Austin.

Hardin-Simmons finished with a 16-5-1 overall record, 11-0-0 in the conference last season and did not concede a goal to a conference opponent – outscoring the conference 70-0. The Cowgirls are a unanimous pick in the West and received six first-place votes. Second-year member University of Texas at Dallas is picked second as it competes in the West Division for the first time. The Comets received 24 total points and are closely followed by the University of Dallas with 21 points.

University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, coming off a 6-11-0, 4-9-0 ASC season, is ranked fourth. And rounding out the West Division is Schreiner College and Concordia University with nine points each.

University of Dallas forward Leslie Smith is picked as the Pre-Season Offensive Player of the Year, and Hardin-Simmons fullback Summer Scheel is the Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year. Smith led the conference in shots, points, goals and assists last season.
