Mary Hardin-Baylor, Schreiner College favored to win
inaugural ASC softball championship

RICHARDSON, Texas -- University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Schreiner College have been selected as co-favorites to win the American Southwest Conference's inaugural softball championship according to a vote taken by Conference Softball Coaches, Directors of Athletics and Sports Information Directors.

The American Southwest Conference sponsors softball as a conference championship for the first time and will have six institutions playing softball. East Texas Baptist University is ineligible for the ASC Championship as it continues to phase out its athletic scholarships through the end of the 1998-99 academic year.

Mary Hardin-Baylor received 4 of the 9 first-place votes for a total of 35 points and Schreiner College received two first-place votes and six second-place votes. Mississippi College, the only other school to receive first-place votes, is picked to finish third with 29 points. Howard Payne University (19) and Sul Ross State University (17) round out the pre-season poll.
