Ed Garza
Volleyball Coach
Ed Garza joined the Austin
College staff in August of 1996, when he became the Lady
Kangaroos fifth all-time head volleyball coach. Garza has
brought a wealth of volleyball experience to Sherman, as the Lady
Kangaroos have posted a 27-32 overall record during his two-year
tenure, and they have steadily moved up the conference standings,
taking third in 1997. Before accepting the Austin College
position, he served as head coach at North Lake College for two
seasons. During his two seasons at North Lake, the Lady Blazers
compiled an impressive 48-24 overall mark.
Garza also served as an assistant coach at Henderson State University in 1989-90, plus he was an assistant coach at Ouachita Baptist University (his alma mater) from 1986-1989. During that period, the Lady Tigers were an outstanding 113-23 overall and 42-6 in Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference play. Ouachita Baptist appeared in the NAIA National Tournament in 1987 and 1988, along with winning the conference title during those two seasons and two NAIA District 17 crowns.
He is the head coach and co-founder of the Dallas Summit Volleyball Club. For the last five years, Dallas Summit Volleyball Club teams have qualified for the USA Juniors National Tournament. In 1998, Garza coached a team to an 84-13 mark and a berth in the National Tournament.
A 1979 graduate of Falfurrias High School, Garza earned a B.S.E. degree in physical education and a Masters Degree from Ouachita Baptist University in 1986. While at Ouachita Baptist, he lettered in track and cross country for three years. In 1996, Garza coached the Austin College women to the ASC cross country title and was named ASC Coach of the Year. The 1998 Austin College volleyball team, under the direction of third year head coach Ed Garza, will look to continue the positive trend of moving up the conference standings. Over the past two seasons, the Lady Kangaroos have moved up to third place in the ASC standings, and last years win total of 18 was double the number of wins the team posted in 1996. This years team returns a solid group of veterans and should have a talented group of newcomers that will make a positive impact on the program. In fact, this years Austin College volleyball squad has been picked in a preseason poll of league Athletic Directors, Head Coaches and Sports Information Directors to win the American Southwest Conferences east division title.
Four starters return to the 1998 Austin College Volleyball team led by 5-9, junior outside hitter Ginger Dunlap. Last season, Dunlap, who averaged over 3.2 kills per game, earned Second Team All-ASC honors. In 1996, she was named American Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year. An outstanding defense player, Ginger led the Lady Kangaroos in digs with 347 last season.
1997 American Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Conference performer, Michelle Alexander is back to direct the Austin College offense from the setter position. Alexander also led the team in service aces in 1997 with 69.
In the middle of the Lady Kangaroos, 5-11 senior Casey Harris returns to her starting spot. An Honorable Mention All-Conference pick in 97, Harris is the team returning leader in blocks. Last year, she averaged nearly one block per game.
Rounding out the returning starters for Austin College is 5-8 outside hitter Amity Overall.Head coach Garza will welcome his largest recruiting class this season, as ten new players will join his eight returning letterwinners when Austin College opens practice in late August.
The Austin College Volleyball team will open arguable the toughest schedule in the history of the program at the Southwestern University Tournament in Georgetown, Texas on Friday, September 4. The teams home opener will be the following Friday, September 11 in the Second Annual Austin College Volleyball Classic. AC opens their difficult American Southwest Conference schedule at Mississippi College on September 26. (top of page)
