Venera Flores
Volleyball Coach
Although Venera Flores may be a new addition to its
coaching staff, she's no stranger to the University of Dallas. A
three-time letterwinner with the Lady Crusader volleyball team,
Flores now joins the Dallas roster as one of three first-time
head coaches.
A native of El Paso, Texas, Flores is a 1991 graduate of Andress High School where she played four seasons of volleyball. She was a two-time member of the school's varsity squad and was selected as team captain four consecutive years. As a freshman, Flores was chosen as the team's Most Valuable Player, and was later selected to the All-District Team as a senior.
Following high school, Flores attended the University of Dallas where, as a freshman, she played an instrumental role in developing the school's club volleyball team into an intercollegiate program. Flores competed on the varsity level for the following three seasons and was chosen as team captain each year. She finished her career as the team's #1 setter, was twice selected to the TIAA All-Conference Team and currently holds the individual school records for assists in a game (45), assists in a season (630) and assists in a career (1566).
Venera Flores received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Dallas in 1995, and just recently earned her MBA in Marketing in August 1998. She was on the National Dean's List for MBA students and is a member of Sigma Iota Epsilon, a professional management fraternity. Aside from her duties at UD, Coach Flores has been Camp Coordinator for the Tim Hardaway Basketball Camp for the past six years, and is also employed with the City of Irving as a Recreation Specialist.
During the previous year, Flores was on staff
with the Coppell Classic Volleyball Club as head coach of its
16-elite team. She currently holds memberships in both the United
States Volleyball Association and the USVBA Referees Association.

For the sixth consecutive year, the University of Dallas Volleyball Team will again be under the direction of a new head coach. Venera Flores, UD alum and former Lady Crusader setter, takes over the helm for the 1998 season as she begins her first year of collegiate coaching.
Surprisingly, the Lady Crusaders, who finished with a 7-20 overall record last season, were picked to finish second in the east division of the American Southwest Conference. Dallas is returning only two players from last year's team. Though she does expect a strong finish for her team, Flores realizes that inexperience will play a key role in this season's outcome. Her current roster of 11 players includes nine first-time freshman. The Lady Crusaders will have to rely heavily on its senior leadership if they are to make a run at the conference championship.
Heading the attack will be Erin Daughters, a three year letter winner who returns for her final season with Dallas. Flores expects Daughters to be one of the top hitters in the conference this year. A second team All-Conference selection last season, Daughters has led the team in hitting each of her three years with Dallas. Senior Christa Hayes is the team's only other returning player. Also a three year letter winner, Hayes is a consistently solid defensive player. As a senior, Flores is expecting Hayes to fill a leadership role with the young players and predicts an improvement in her overall play, especially in the back row.
Much of Flores' excitement this season comes from the fact that she has recruited some very solid high school players who are much more committed to the sport than in previous years. Although the entire core of newcomers brings previous playing experience to Dallas, Flores has great hopes for freshmen Mandy Martin (Tyler, Texas - T.K. Gorman HS) and Jennifer Anderson (Tullahoma, Tenn.), in particular. Martin, an All-District and Honorable Mention All-American, has been touted as one of the best private school setters in the state of Texas. Anderson, a tall, strong player, has shown that she has the ability to play at the collegiate level.
Overall, Flores predicts a year filled with excitement and development, both for the Lady Crusaders and for herself, as a head coach. The newcomers show the potential to be strong players in the future, while the seniors bring needed leadership and collegiate experience to the court. (top of page)
