Randy Lewallyn
Volleyball Coach
In Lewallyn's first year as the head volleyball coach, the Jackets finished with a 17-16 record and finished second in the American Southwest Conference with a 10-2 conference record. Before being named head coach, Lewallyn was an assistant for two years under former head coach Damon Wilson. Lewallyn was an essential part of the Jackets winning two conference championships in those two years. HPU has won eight championships in the last 11 years and has not finished below third place in the ASC. (top of page)
Looking for their fourth conference championship in five years the Howard Payne Lady Jackets are facing a season that many experts think will be a rebuilding year for HPU. Picked to finish third in the American Southwest Conference by conference coaches, Howard Payne is facing a season without the services of six players who graduated last year.
But according to head coach Randy Lewallyn, the Jackets are thinking retool instead of rebuild. Lewallyn describes his team as "overachievers" that could still qualify for the conference tournament. Returning starters for the Lady Jackets include junior Baylor Brown and senior Tonya Laird. Brown was named to the second team All-Conference squad at the middle blocker position and Laird was an honorable mention outside hitter last year.
Other players to have key roles this season are setter Julie Price and defensive specialist Toni Bernard. With several players returning from the junior varsity, the Lady Jackets should be young but able to meet the challenges of a new season. According to Lewallyn, the biggest advantage that his team has is its teamwork and the example that Laird and Brown give. Come November look for the Lady Jackets to be in the thick of a conference race and showing the conference the difference between rebuilding and retooling. (top of page)
