Wendi Gibbs
Volleyball Coach
Wendi Gibbs made some definite strides last year, her
second at the helm of the LeTourneau University volleyball team,
when the Yellow Jackets tied for the Big State Conference
regular-season title and went into the post-season tournament as
the second seed.
The overall record improved by eight games, from 6-27 to 14-21, and the conference mark was a glittering 7-1. Her program also gained some instant stability when she became the first coach in five years to remain a the helm -- four-straight coaches came and left after a year on the job.
A move into the American Southwest Conference and NCAA Division III hasn't slowed the development either, since Gibbs has more players on hand than in her first two years.
A four-year lettermen at Harding University in Searcy, Ark., Gibbs was a head coach one year in high school at Spring Hill in Longview, Texas, before coming to LeTourneau. While at Spring Hill, her team forged a 19-7 record and guided the team to the state playoffs in 1995.

The LeTourneau University volleyball team comes into the 1998 season off a 14-21 record and first place tie in the Big State Conference. But with the return of only two starters and no letterwinners from the 1997 squad, the Yellow Jackets realize there will be some growing pains in their first year of competition in the American Southwest Conference.
Middle blocker Rhonda Richardson and outside hitter Stephanie Sloane are the only returning starters and will be asked to carry the load for LeTourneau. Richardson, a 5-8 senior and two-time Big State Conference Player of the Year, recorded 2.2 kills per game, 4.06 digs per games and a .932 serving percentage last season. Sloane, a 5-10 junior and two-year starter, averaged .93 kills and 1.32 digs per game last season and had an .833 serving percentage.
Despite no letterwinners returning for the 1998 season, LeTourneau has five newcomers that are not foreign to the school. Senior Magie Krahmer returns to the team after being ineligible last year. Libby Smith, a 5-8, junior; Erin Lioret, a 6-0, junior; LaDarla Sanders, a 5-5, junior; and Stephanie Cooke, a 5-10, junior are all former basketball players at LeTourneau. (top of page)
