What is needed for internet connection in the Residence Halls?
You will need a PC or a Mac, network interface card, and Ethernet cable.
Where can I purchase a network card and Ethernet cable?
The university bookstore stocks network cards and Ethernet cables. Or you can visit one of the local computer retailers.
What do I do if I have trouble installing the network card?
Call the helpdesk @4900 or call the manufacturer of your pc.
Does it cost to use the on-campus internet?
It is included in your fees.
What brand of network card? How much do they cost?
Information Services suggest purchasing 3com or Linksys 10/100. As for cost generally 3com PCI are $75.00 and $175.00 for laptops. Linksys PCI $35.00 and $100.00 for laptop.
What do I do if I can not get out on the internet?
Try different websites, taking great care to type and spell the sites address correctly. If that does not work. Check the cables and reboot your pc.What do I do when I get all zeros as my IP address (Windows 95/98/ME)?
Go to Start, then click Run. Type winipcfg. Check and make sure your Ethernet adapter is listed and highlighted in the drop down box. Note: If you don’t see your adapter and all you see is the dial-up adapter, you need to either install your network card or reinstall your network card.
If there is only zeros or an IP address of 192.?.?.? then you need to check the cables(make sure you have an Ethernet cable and not a phone cable) and reboot. If that still does not work call the Helpdesk @ 4900.
Do you provide software i.e. Netscape, Internet Explorer, FTP etc.?
No Information Services and McMurry University does not provide software. There is a variety of software available via the internet for free.
What if I am having trouble with my computer other than my internet access?
If you have trouble with hardware or software on your computer we cannot provide support for it. You must contact the manufacturer of the part or software in question. We maintain the internet connection and the wiring up to the port in the wall.
