Accessing the Internet from the Residence Hall
What is needed for Internet hookup in the
Residence Hall
Students will need the following:
- A PC running Windows 95/98, Millenium Edition, Windows NT 4.0, Windows
2000, or Windows XP. Or if the student has a MAC the operating system
should be 7.5.1 or higher.
- A network interface card. These cards can be picked
up at most computer retail stores. We suggest purchasing a 3COM 10/100
Ethernet Card or Linksys. We have been using 3COM cards on campus and found
them reliable. However there are many other brands.
- You will need a network patch cable (RJ-45). It runs
from the PC to the port in the wall. When you purchase the network
interface card, you can pick up patch cable. Ask for a RJ-45 cable.
- Information Services has instructions for setting the PC to
the network once the student moves into the dorm.
- You will need to have your operating system disk.
