Spring is on the horizon and Craig Fullerton and his crew of five are working hard to be ready for the burst of nature’s color and activity that will soon follow. Craig heads McMurry University’s grounds crew and under his direction, the campus has seen great improvement in its overall appearance. It is a responsibility that Craig and his people take very seriously.

A retired 30-year veteran of the Abilene Police Department, Craig joined the McMurry staff three years ago in order to help fund his son’s college education. After his son received a degree, Craig enjoyed his work at McMurry so much he decided to continue.

The first impression many students and visitors get of McMurry comes from the carefully-prepared flower gardens and well-trimmed lawns. Craig and his crew now oversee both the on-campus landscaping, as well as two dozen “out properties” that McMurry owns. One of the major projects currently underway is the large garden area in the Quad, which Craig is hoping to turn into a showplace.

“We try to plant gardens that are 80 percent self sustaining,” Craig said. This allows the grounds crew to continue to expand and improve on the campus.

Much of Craig’s expertise in landscaping comes from his wife, Sandy (McMurry ex’ 79), and their work at his own home over the years. He also credits the grounds keeping staff with a great deal of expertise, and he tries to provide them opportunities for training each year.

So, as you walk across campus and see the beautiful flowers and trimmed lawns, remember to thank those who work so hard to make McMurry University a great place to live and work.
