Charlie Hukill certainly helps keep the
McMurry University campus entertaining. As Professor of Theatre and
Director of Technical Theatre, Charlie can be found building sets
in Ryan Little Theater, performing on stage in Radford Auditorium
or entertaining the members of the McMurry University Retired
Fellowship with his hilarious performance from “Greater Tuna.” With
28 years experience on and behind the stage, he’s about as skilled
in his discipline as they come.
Charlie began teaching at McMurry in 1985, and
has been an integral part of the faculty ever since. He enjoys
teaching at McMurry because of the small campus environment. It
affords him the opportunity to know all his colleagues, meet
students outside the Theatre and work in many different theatre
facets. “I enjoy all aspects of theatre. If I were at a big
institution, I would have to narrowly focus on one specific area of
the discipline. The small campus environment at McMurry allows me
to participate at every level,” said Charlie.
Charlie also enjoys the opportunity to teach
classes outside his discipline in the McMurry Core classes—a set of
classes taught by two professors from different departments. “Being
able to team teach with faculty from other disciplines has been a
wonderful experience for me. It has had a profound effect on my
knowledge base and on my teaching.”
Finally, Charlie enjoys McMurry’s faith-based
affiliation. “Spirituality is an important part of enlightenment
and its inclusion in the curriculum helps to provide the
well-rounded, liberal arts base of the McMurry education.”
When asked about his most memorable experience
at McMurry, Charlie replied, “After so many years at McMurry, I
have had many memorable experiences and placing one above another
is difficult. On a personal level, I have had several memorable
experiences performing on stage during summer dinner theatre
seasons and directing plays. I have also been proud of a number of
set designs over the years. With regard to the work of students, I
am always pleased to see them excel in performance, direction
and/or design. It is exciting and rewarding to watch them grow,
apply what they have learned in class and in work experience, and
shoulder the responsibilities that go along with production
work.”
Charlie’s personal teaching style as a profound
effect on his theatre students. “Because the faculty has the
opportunity to interact with students on an individual and often
very personal level, I am still in contact with many of our
graduates and I now consider them friends.” McMurry and its
students look forward to many more years of entertainment and
guidance from this talented professor.
