Charlotte MartinCharlotte Martin

Secretary to the Athletics Director

Within a few steps of entering the athletics building at McMurry University, you will come face to face with the beautifully contagious smile of Charlotte Martin. Known as “Ms. Charlotte” to student-athletes, she serves as secretary to the Athletic Director and oversees the ebb and flow of athletic events. But to the students of McMurry, Charlotte is so much more. Her mothering personality makes them feel right at home, especially when she hints that she might have some holiday candy or extra brownies stashed around the office.

Charlotte’s roots run deep at McMurry. She and her husband, Roger, both attended in the early 70s, where Charlotte was a member of T.I.P. social club and her husband played football. After graduating and teaching for 32 years in the Texas Public School System, she returned to McMurry where her son was attending and playing football. Together, she and her husband served as Presidents of the Football Parents Organization through the duration of their son’s attendance at McMurry. “We loved traveling to Menlo Park, California, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the ASC Conference games to watch our Indians play,” said Charlotte.

This February will mark the fifth year since her return to campus, “and I cannot tell you how much joy it has brought to my life,” she said. “McMurry coaches are amazing. We have over 400 student-athletes pass through our programs every day and their lives are touched in many positive ways. I can tell you from 32 years of teaching that your students continue to touch your lives even after they leave you, and I have seen that first-hand with coaches at McMurry and their former athletes.”

Charlotte recognizes the impact that the athletic program has on the development of young people. She believes that participation in athletics while in college promotes responsibility, time-management skills and tenaciousness. “Being persistent and sticking with and finishing what they start will be attributes they need when beginning their careers--whether in the job market, raising a family, starting a business, or whatever they decide to do with their futures,” said Charlotte.

Charlotte loves being a part of the McMurry family as much as her students and coworkers love her being here. “It doesn’t matter when you graduated from McMurry--the memories remain in your heart and become part of you always. I love the traditions, the closeness of classmates, the smallness and simplicity of campus life, and the welcoming feeling students receive from McMurry staff and faculty. It’s a happy place to be.”
