Mark WilcoxThe Music Department is a dynamic and active department on the campus of McMurry University.  It offers numerous and varied opportunities for performance, as well as many opportunities to develop one’s musical talent through applied lessons and classes.

McMurry’s music ensembles present a broad cross-section of performing options for musicians.  The Chanters, McMurry’s premiere choir, performs regular concerts on campus and in the Abilene community, and tours annually throughout the state, across the nation and abroad.  The choral chamber ensemble McMurry Sounds utilizes the close harmonies of jazz and popular music for much of their a cappella repertoire.  The McMurry Wind Ensemble also is no stranger to traveling; in addition to continental tours, they were recently the only U.S. band invited to perform at the World Conference of the International Society for Music Education in Bologna, Italy  The McMurry Marching Band last year was featured in exhibition at the AAA Texas State Marching Finals in San Antonio, Texas.  The McMurry Percussion Ensemble performs cutting-edge compositions in addition to standard repertoire, and annually hosts celebrated percussionists and ensembles such as the Third Coast Percussion Ensemble.  The McMurry Trumpet Choir was recently selected by blind audition to perform at the prestigious National Trumpet Competition, and continues to press for another berth at this prestigious gathering.  Other performing opportunities include the McMurry Jazz Band, woodwind chamber ensembles, a concerto competition, regular student recitals and master classes.

McMurry offers both the Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Music, and the Bachelor of Music Education degree with an emphasis in either instrumental or vocal music.  The BA degree allows students to pursue music performance as a major, and yet has ample hours to allow for the true liberal arts experience in which McMurry excels.  The BME degree is an excellent degree for future music educators due to the weighted concentration in music pedagogy and classroom practice one receives before the student teaching experience.  The dedicated faculty and staff of the McMurry Music Department are devoted to preparing students to be excellent performers and music educators.

Whether your musical pursuits are for performance purposes or for professional development for an occupation, McMurry is a place where you can grow as a musician and a leader in your chosen field.  Please feel free to browse our site and explore the world of music at McMurry.
