Courses of Instruction
1300: Introduction to Ethics
Prerequisites: none. This course may be used to fulfill McMurry University’s general education requirement for Leadership, Excellence, ad Virtue. The course provides an introduction to ethical theroies (deontological, teleological, virtue ethics, etc.), moral decision-making, and key contemporary moral issues. Particular attention is given to practical application in moral reasoning and to the development of sensitivity to ethical issues of contemporary society, focusing on rights and duries of individuals and groups and on the nature of legitimate needs and values. (Fall, Spring)
1310: Concepts and Techniques of Servant Leadership
Prerequisites: none. A discussion of the nature, styles, and skills of servant leadership, utilizing historic and contemporary models and emphasizing moral roots of responsible leadership. Students will participate in a field experience in a service agency combined with reflection and discussion in small groups on issues in service leadership. (Fall, Spring)
2399: Formation in Servant Leadership
Prerequisites: SLD 1300 or 1310. A seminar style course focusing on personal and interpersonal growth in servant leadership. Emphasis is placed on self-awareness, personal mastery (effective self-leadership), deep listening, group facilitation, and service learning. (Fall)
3310: Theories of Leadership
Prerequisites: SLD 1300 or 1310. A seminar-style course focusing on recent research and literature in leadership. Emphasis will be placed on the mastery and implementation of key leadership principles and practices with particular attention to principles of servant leadership. (Spring)
4399: Community Renewal
Prerequisites: SLD 1300 or 1310. Community Renewal is a travel course focusing on strategies for community renewal with particular attention to the principles developed by Community Renewal International (CRI) in Shreveport, Louisiana. Emphasis will be placed on learning, experiencing, and mastering key principles of community renewal with emphasis on community renewal as an expression of Christian ministry and servant leadership. Community renewal principles will be informed and enhanced by a Christian hermeneutic of the margins and by systems theory. (Summer)
