Krista Waters receives history award from
Dr. Jean A. Stuntz of West Texas A&M University
Doing History at McMurry University
At a recent Phi Alpha Theta history honors conference, McMurry history major Krista Waters received the award for best paper in her section. A total of four McMurrry students participated in the meeting, presenting the fruits of their research. Nor is this the only occasion that McMurry history students have left the confines of the McMurry campus. In the fall of 2006, Dr. Don Frazier took his upper division Civil War class on a week-long tour of Civil War battlefields, from Vicksburg on the Mississippi River to Shiloh, Tennessee.
McMurry history classes have also included special trips to the Boston area to study the American Revolution and the early whaling industry.

History has been an active part of McMurry University’s academic program ever since the institution’s first classes began in 1923. Today, history continues to be made by a full-time staff of four who pride themselves on their professional accomplishments both within and outside the classroom. McMurry’s small, intimate environment promises students the kind of personal attention that they often miss at larger schools, but also affords them a surprisingly varied mix of intellectual challenges. It’s this combination of intimacy and intellectual diversity that distinguishes the McMurry history program and enables it to fulfill McMurry’s mission of promoting excellence, leadership, and virtue.
