What is SOAR?
Student Orientation And Registration is the time for you student to meet his/her advisor to discuss his/her fall schedule and register for classes. The SOAR Family Program gives you a chance to learn about the opportunities for McMurry families and the support that is available to your student.
How much does SOAR cost?
The SOAR program is $17 for guests 12 years and up, $5 for children 6-11 years, and free for children under the age of 5. Guests include parents, children, family members, friends, and others, excluding the student. This cost covers all meals while on campus and printed materials. All fees are nonrefundable.
Students pay a fall orientation fee that is billed to their account. Since this is a billed, they will not pay this amount during SOAR.
How do I sign up for SOAR?
Easy--just fill out the registration form and mail it with any additional money that is due. Students may register online at http://www.mcm.edu/newsite/web/students/soar.htm or request information be mailed to them. Each summer SOAR session is limited to the first 75 students and registration must be completed one week before the event. If you have further questions, please call the Office of Admissions at (325) 793-4700.
Should my other children come?
Child care will not be provided. Children over the age of 12 will be charged a $17 guest fee. Children 6-11 of age will be charged a $5 guest fee. Children under the age 5 are free.
Where will I stay?
Guests have the option to stay at a local hotel.
What should I bring?
You should bring pen, pencil, paper, calculator and casual, comfortable clothes.
What should my student bring?
In addition to the above list, he/she should bring documentation for any AP credit, dual college credit, or THEA scores if applicable, as well as a completed health form.
What should be included on the health form?
All students must provide a completed health form including a current immunization record at the time SOAR. In addition to the infant series of vaccines, students are required to have the following: Bacterial Meningitis shot at least 10 days before SOAR, Tetanus Booster within the past 10 years; two doses of MMR; TB skin test within the past one year; Hepatitis B series of three injections.
What is placement testing?
Placement testing is a tool to assist students in registering for the appropriate level of academic work. The following is a guideline that is used for placement testing:
SAT/ACT Sub scores
Your student will not have to take the placement test if their test scores are:
SAT Math: 530 or higher (Algebra placement test)
SAT Critical Reading: 490 or higher (Reading placement tests)
SAT Writing: 490 or higher (Writing, Composition placement tests)
ACT English: 19 or higher (Writing, Composition placement tests)
ACT Math: 23 or higher (Algebra placement test)
ACT Reading: 19 or higher (Reading placement test)
(AP credit, THEA scores or concurrent/dual credit courses may also be used.)

What if I need special accommodations for the placement tests due to a disability?
In order to receive special accommodations for testing, your student must first complete an Application for Disability Services and provide adequate documentation of his/her disability from a qualified professional such as a licensed psychologist or a diagnostician who has evaluated the student within the last three years. This information must be received by the Disability Services Coordinator at least 2 weeks prior to SOAR. What is CLEP?
College level Exam Placement testing is the most widely accepted way to receive college credit for knowledge you have already obtained. It is also called credit by examination. CLEP testing is offered by appointment, throughout the year. To inquire about current test fees or to register, please call 325-793-4620. Payment will need to be made to the McMurry Business Office prior to exam.
Students who plan to register for classes at one of these sessions must attend all SOAR activities. If you do not attend one of the SOAR sessions you will not be able to register for your fall classes until Friday, August 24.
