McMurry
Announce $9.3 Million
Dollar Gift--Largest in Our History
McMurry has received the largest gift in school history from the
estate of Betty Jo Mowry of Lubbock, Texas, estimated to be worth
in excess of $9.3 million, University officials announced at the
January Board of Trustees meeting Friday, Jan. 26.
“This is a transformational gift that will
be used to support our vision for the future of McMurry
University,” said President Dr. John H. Russell. “We are truly
grateful for the support of Betty Jo Mowry and the many others who
believe in McMurry University and its mission to provide a quality,
Christian-based education to young men and women.”
Mrs. Mowry attended McMurry in the 1930s
and was a lifelong supporter of Methodist causes. The Board of
Trustees will study the best use for the unrestricted gift over the
next few months.
McMurry also announced it has achieved its
$2.35 million goal for renovating the Bynum Band Hall through the
generous gifts of individuals and foundations. The Band Hall was
originally built in 1959.
Construction on the building is scheduled
to start in late Spring 2007. Renovation is scheduled to be
completed in time for Fall 2008 classes for the Band Hall, named
for legendary Texas band director “Prof” Raymond Bynum, who
directed the McMurry University Band for more than 25
years.
