McMurry University, AISD to unveil Math/Science Magnet School classroom August 19th
ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University and the Abilene Independent School District will unveil the classroom for the new Fifth Grade Math/Science Magnet School during grand opening ceremonies Tuesday, August 19, at 6 p.m. in the Old Main Administration Building. The classroom will consist of 22 fifth grade students for the new magnet school.
The program will feature a tour of the classroom and a ribbon cutting ceremony with McMurry President Dr. John Russell, AISD Superintendent Dr. David Polnick, Texas State Rep. Susan King and other local and state officials.
The Math/Science Magnet class will be taught by Ms. Sharlyn Bammel, an AISD teacher, with instructional support from the McMurry University faculty. Students will be taught the regular fifth-grade curriculum required by the state of Texas, with an emphasis on math and science.
Students attend class daily on the McMurry University campus, and will participate in a variety of engaging educational experiences. These experiences will include field experiences, as well as hands-on lab experiences.
People are needed for math and science careers and the magnet school would be one way of sparking interest in future careers, said Dr. Beverly Lenoir, McMurry University vice president for academic affairs. Being on a college campus may also help students realize that college is an option in the future.
The next available program is on Monday, March 26, 2007. Students can sign-up here for the March program.
