Note
from the Dean... |
The life of a McMurry student involves
much more than attending classes and studying. At McMurry,
students can acquire incredible knowledge in the classroom,
but can also acquire and develop leadership, social, and communication
skills by becoming actively involved in student organizations,
campus life, residence life, and a host of other activities.
The secret is to "Get Involved!" The opportunities
are enormous: chanters, band, athletics, hall council, MSG
(student government), social clubs, honor societies, service
organizations, intramurals, orientation leaders, resident
assistants, Indian Insight, cheerleaders, War Whoop, Servant
Leadership, Campus Activities Board (CAB), Totem, theatre,
and much more. Becoming involved in these activities
enrich the campus experience for students. |
Student
Affairs Mission |
| Student Affairs seeks to provide
an educational environment that supports students' social,
personal, spiritual, and academic development and facilitates
their involvement and commitment to the campus community.
The "students first" philosophy is based on creating a progressive
and interactive learning environment which encourages students
to explore their potential through empowering opportunities
for leadership, scholarship, and critical thought. |
|
|
|
| Vision |
| Student Affairs will provide an educational
and interactive learning and social environment that encourages
undergraduate student development. This development will be inspired
through student involvement with social and academic organizations,
student leadership roles, and quality student affairs programs that
further strengthen student commitment to McMurry. Student Affairs
at McMurry University will become a national leader in innovative
programming. Not only will campus activities increase, but alternative
programs, new grant-funded projects, and McMurry/Abilene initiatives
will be created and sustained to serve the students. These endeavors
will increase resources and opportunities available to all students.
The professional staff of Student Affairs will be familiar with
student development theories and practices, active in professional
associations, authors of published works, and presenters of national
programs. Skilled at working directly with students and faculty,
this ethnically and culturally diverse staff will gain the academic
community's respect by responsibly promoting the profession and
the student development philosophy through participation in university-wide
committees, faculty meetings, search committees, campus activities,
and campus publications. Given the inherent nature of a private,
church-affiliated university, and the issues and trends that arise
within it, students and student affairs professionals will create
an environment that challenges students to explore their beliefs
regarding multiculturalism, leadership, and social responsibility.
This will be met by increasing opportunities for students to govern,
lead, create, and initiate vision for the betterment of the different
student affairs departments and the McMurry community. |

- We believe in the development of students into well-rounded
persons - physically, spiritually, emotionally, occupationally,
intellectually, and socially - which when coupled with practical
experiences, better prepares them for life.
- As a diverse community, all students, regardless of their
ethnicity, culture, beliefs, or orientation will be recognized,
respected, and represented.
- We believe in the recruitment and retention of students to
organizations and extracurricular activities, thereby motivating
and empowering them to further develop their understanding of
diversity, leadership, academic experiences, community service,
and connectedness to the McMurry community.
- As members of the student affairs profession, we believe in
the promotion of professionalism through role modeling, teamwork,
membership/leadership in professional organizations, and dedication
