Grading
You will have assessments throughout the semester in addition to a semester final. You will be responsible for outside reading, homework assignments, individual and group activities, class participation, class presentations, lesson plans, outside planning for student teaching, and student teaching the creative drama sessions.
Class attendance and participation: 20%
Homework assignments: 10%
Lessons plans: 10%
Teaching project: 20%
In class exams: 10%
Final Exam/Project: 30%
Attendance and Make-up Work
Each time a class is missed, work due for that class period must be turned in the day you return to class. If you are absent on the day of an assessment, you must schedule a time with me to make up the exam. This must be done within 3 days of your return. If you are absent on the day of a presentation, you will do the presentation on the day you return to class. This is largely a participatory class, so every effort should be made to come to each class and arrive on time.
If you have more than 3 unexcused absences during the semester, 2 points, per absence, will be deducted from your final average. (ex. if you have 5 unexcused absences, 4 points will be deducted from your FINAL average.) A letter from Dr. Lack, from Student Services, from you physician, from Dean Jackson constitutes an excused absence. A phone call from you is considerate gesture, and I appreciate it, but it does not constitute an excused absence.
Teaching Project
For three class periods in November, you will go to an elementary school (Jackson), and conduct creative drama sessions. Each of you will work with a partner from this class, and you will be conducting 1 session each MWF morning (9-10) during those 3 days in November. This is an extremely important part of this class. You will be working with REAL children; therefore, it is imperative that you know what you are doing. Class attendance and participation is the only way that you can obtain this knowledge.
If you make every effort to attend each class on time, and if you are ready with reading assignments, homework assignments, presentations, group activities, and other projects, and if you pay attention, listen, and contribute to class discussions, and if you do well on the assessments, and if you are adequately prepared for the student teaching sessions, you will have no trouble making an A.
If you miss class and are frequently late, or if you do not participate positively in class activities or discussions, or if you are consistently late turning in homework assignments and projects, or if you fall behind in the reading assignments, or if you do poorly on the assessments and do not plan well or participate actively in the student teaching sessions, you will have a great deal of trouble making an A.
I will give you adequate preparation time for tests, presentations, and other assignments. Be sure you check your syllabus throughout the semester. If you have questions or concerns during the semester, please do not hestitate to visit with me.
