4389 Voices Unmasked: Teen Theatre for Prevention and Communication. (3-0) Prerequisite: Auditions in April or August and by permission of instructor only. Under the supervision of a director/manager, the members of the company write, rehearse, and perform message-based programs for area schools on a regular basis throughout the school year. A cooperative effort between McMurry University and Region 14 Education Service Center. (Fall and Spring)

Goals of the Course: Students will develop critical skills in foresight and problem solving by creating original skits, scenes, and monologues to stimulate thought and discussion. The performance will center on recognition and prevention of self-destructive behaviors such as negative peer pressure, alcohol and other drug use, and sexual involvement. Students will identify with a variety of characters and consider risk situations in a non-threatening environment. The performers will articulate the risks involved in self destructive behavior along with a no-use message.
Requirements:
Students meet each Tuesday and Thursday for rehearsal and or performance, from 1:00-5:00 pm. With the directors help, students will create an original drama program appropriate for secondary school students in Region 14. Program will focus on decision-making, conflict resolution, current issues for teens, and general risk issues for adolescents.
Students will register for class.
Students will complete necessary paperwork every two weeks to be submitted to Region 14 Education Service Center.
Students will be on time and always be prepared with uniforms and notebook.
Students will agree to perform community service work periodically throughout semester.
Students will agree to perform the Voices program for various church groups, parents weekend, theatre major/minor meeting, Boy Scouts, TETA, Thespians.
Students will adhere to all norms accepted by the group and approved by the director, McMurry and Region 14.
Region 14 will provide transportation and travel-related expenses. Region 14 will provide uniforms and props. Region 14 will pay each student a stipend. Region 14 will pay the faculty members salary to teach/supervise this course. Because of that, students are only charged a recording fee of $60.00 to take this course.
