First Party System – What personalities defined the first political parties in the United States?  What were their views, and how did these views shape early party philosophies?  Was there a “Revolution of 1800”?

Diplomacy in the Early Republic – How was the United States susceptible to European affairs?  What were the implications of American dependence upon foreign trade?  What diplomatic troubles did the United States face prior to 1810? What were the causes of the War of 1812 and how was the conflict ultimately resolved?  How did arrangements made after the war of 1812 contribute to American national security?

Economic Nationalism – How did the “New Republicans” seek to prevent another conflict like the War of 1812 from taking place?  What does “economic nationalism” entail?  Why is the decade following the War of 1812 known as the “Era of Good Feelings”?  How did the Panic of 1819 bring these feelings to an end?

Second Party System – What are the ideological and philosophical roots of the Second Party System?  From where did the Whigs and Democrats emerge?  How did these new parties form?  Who were the major players in both parties and why?  What programs did they advocate?  Which party ultimately had more success?

Jacksonian Democracy – How did Andrew Jackson change the nature of the American Presidency?  What did he do to expand the power of the president?  What happened as a result of his actions and what were the consequences?

Territorial Expansionism – How did national expansion play into the agendas of the political parties in the United States?  How did the United States go about acquiring territory after 1840?  What were the military and political consequences of this expansion?
